Nature in Dorset

Dorset is one of the premier counties in the south of England for providing opportunities to enjoy nature while on holiday. The RSPB has several reserves, the Arne Peninsular is a fine example and Dorset is well known as a major stepping point on the route of migratory birds as is Portland Bill a Mecca for bird watchers.

Dorset Coastal Cottages is a supporter of the Dorset Wildlife Trust and you can also contribute to their excellent work via a donation on our Booking Form. They maintain a variety of Wildlife Reserves throughout the county including the Purbeck Marine Nature Reserve at Kimmeridge Bay and Brownsea Island two of many that are close to Dorset Coastal Cottages.

The other charity supported by Dorset Coastal Cottages is the Jurassic Coast. The educational work undertaken brings to life the amazing fossil record, especially at Lyme Regis/Charmouth but also along the glorious 90 odd miles between there and Swanage/Studland.

Other more special interest nature watching is provided by the companies/websites listed below whether it is an evening badger watching or a trip to Brownsea Island to see the red squirrels.

"Dorset Wildlife Trust was founded in 1961 to protect the wildlife and natural habitats of the county. It is now the largest voluntary conservation organisation working in Dorset, managing 40 nature reserves and supported by over 23,000 members. The aims are to create and enhance wildlife havens, inspire people about the natural world and foster sustainable living."
