Dorset has some amazing things to do during the winter months and February Half Term is a great time to try out a new activity. Here are some of our suggestions:
Half Term Fossil Hunting
There are many places to go fossil hunting along the Jurassic Coast – we would recommend using the professionals and going on an organised walk or fossil hunt. The winter months are especially good for fossil hunting as the winter storms erode the cliffs and wash out more fossils that can be found easily (with the right guidance)
Jurassic Coast Guides
A guided fossil walk with Martin from Jurassic Coast Guides along Charmouth beach is fantastic. This Dorset Tourism Gold Award winning guided tour is a must for all the family. Last year I was lucky enough to take a walk with Martin and discover some amazing fossils. Read our BLOG post.
Lulworth Fossil Hunt 19th February
Following a short talk on fossils, take a walk to the shingle beach of Lulworth Cove, where you will find evidence of animal life from millions of years ago, all within a short walk of the Visitor Centre. Price: Under 16’s £2.50 | Adults £5. Booking information: Lulworth Fossil Hunt.
Half Term at The Etches Collection, Kimmeridge
Enjoy fossil mould painting, fossil excavation pit, quizzes, activities and worksheets to test your Jurassic knowledge, workshops, Fossil Friday – bring your own fossils to the museum, and examine them in close up with their microscope and have their resident expert Steve Etches identify them. February Half Term Fun at the Tank Museum
Explore Dorset’s largest indoor attraction and experience the biggest day out in history at The Tank Museum…With over 300 vehicles in 10 powerful exhibitions, there’s tonnes to see and do. Have a go at constructing a quarter size Second World War tank in a free half term activity. Kids can also enjoy dressing up, trails and tours, and letting off steam in the soft play areas.
Family Half Term Activities: Tomorrow’s Museum
While the Dorchester County museum is being updated there is a fabulous pop-up museum in Brewery Square, Dorchester where this Half Term there will be Roman and Mosaic Activities.
February Half Term at Corfe Castle
Fun at King John’s Castle – A series of interactive activities will be on offer this half-term. Budding knights and damsels can take part in the “Great Escape” (teddy bear zip wire) and watch missiles launch from the castle’s medieval siege engine.
Kid’s Go Free Fun at Kingston Maurward
Activities every day including the hilariously fun guinea pig fishing sessions! Plus, get up close to alpacas, fluffy rabbits and meet all of the farmyard friends – cows, pigs, chickens, ducks and more. So how about a trip to meet the animals at Kingston Maurward.
Get toasty on Brownsea Island – Enjoy a wintry walk and climb a tree or two on their tree climbing trail. Then you can head on up to the Outdoor Centre where you can toast yourself a tasty treat around a campfire.

Spring Ranger Days
Join one of their ranger days and find out what it’s like to be a ranger on Brownsea Island. Take part in a range of outdoor conservation tasks and wild skills. Recommended for ages 8+. 20th Feb 11am–3pm
Families Matter @ Monkey World
Families matter at Monkey World this half-term! Visit the park and take part in fun family trails. Grab an activity pack and have a great day out with your family, meeting our primate pals.
Pantomime – Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs
Lyme Regis Pantomime Society’s fabulous annual half-term event! This year’s panto is the classic fairytale “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”. Lyme Pantomime Society will guarantee you fun and laughter. There will be singing, dancing and jokes aplenty – all brought to you by the talented local cast. Get ready to boo, hiss and cheer in equal measure! The show runs from Wednesday 20th February to Saturday 23rd February at 7.30pm, with a matinee performance on Saturday at 2.30pm. Super Heroes Half Term Fun at Shire Hall
A comic book superhero trail… can you crack the code? Test your superhero powers with our superhero tests. Everyday: Make a superhero badge! (£2.00 charge applies) Tuesday and Thursday: Storytelling in the cells. Please check the Shire Hall website for times and updates. Museum Annual Pass holders visit for free, 2 kids go free with every full paying adult.
Join a coastal expert for a walk and a talk on the past, present and future of the coastline at Studland Bay. 20th Feb, 1:30pm–3pm.
