Sunny Republic Brewery – Winterborne Kingston, Blandford.
From an old barn on a farm to an amazing modern brewery – with highly drinkable quaffable beer – trust me it is good!
On a recent visit to Sunny Republic it was great to see a fresh brewing company, set up in two old Georgian grain barns close to the Dorset Coast – these have been brilliantly renovated and sympathetically to incorporate a 21st Century brewery while keeping the charm and characteristics of the old barns – beer has now been brewing here since 2012. During the renovation a bat loft for the resident Natta Bats had to be created plus an additional adaption to house a little owl who had also taken up residence in the old buildings.
I had a great time meeting Brent Smith, Rosie, Martyn and the team who showed me round the state of the art, high-tech brewery with possibly the most advanced craft brewing equipment in use in Britain today. This provides the tools and technology to create outrageously fresh and flavoursome ales, bursting with exotic aromas. With each of the 4 vats holding over 8500 pints there is even smart-phone control to enable the brew temperature to be controlled even when the brewer is not on site – how cool is that!
Sunny Republic is based on North West Farm in Winterborne Kingston, near Blandford, which is an arable farm that grows barley. It is one of 26 local farms supplying Warminster Maltings – so the barley grown on the farm eventually ends up in the brew! To complete the cycle and to reduce waste the spent grain from the brewing process is sent off to a local rare breed pig farm where the pigs have a gourmet meal. On the odd occasion one of these pigs finds it’s way to a hog roast at the brewery which I have been assured is an occasion not to miss!
How did the name “Sunny Republic” come about well the inspiration came from the exceptionally sunny weather that Dorset enjoys (most of the time) and the fact that they work with the philosophy of your “glass is always full”. The guys at Sunny Republic are dedicated to brewing fantastic beer with some great imagination and tastes. Beers brewed here stimulate the taste buds and will certainly have you asking for more.
Beach Blonde – this great name attracts the surfers, wind surfers and paddle boarders of Dorset – this beer is a Pacific-style pale ale with brilliant straw blonde appearance and refreshing, fruity aromas and just the thing following an afternoon in / on the surf.
Huna Red – Hibiscus Ale – New Age Red Ale brewed with five malts, citrus hops & hibiscus – a world’s first brewing ale flavoured with hibiscus.
Hop Dog – A very modern IPA (India Pale Ale) with flavours from the tropical Kohatu Hops from New Zealand.
Shark Head – This Friesian Pilsener is a modern take on a rare Pils and is Largered (cold conditioned) and served from 9 gallon casks.
Full English – This smooth session ale is a classic “Best Bitter” with great taste and very Moorish – once sampled a second will certainly be calling!
