A Gem of a Pub
The Sailors Return is a traditional thatched Dorset pub tucked away in the tranquil village of East Chaldon (Chaldon Herring) deep in the Dorset countryside yet close to the sea. The Pub was originally a pair of thatched cottages which were built in true rustic Dorset style out of stone and rubble. It started trading as an inn in the mid nineteenth century and is un-carpeted with flagstone floors in the bar and restaurant retaining the charm of village life and bygone days. Taking its name from when three brothers went off to join the navy and on returning home one found his wife in the company of another man!
Tom (the current landlord) and his team have turned this pub into a great venue for the community and surrounding villages and visitors alike, with local beers and craft cider and offering good quality wines at reasonable prices. They even sell Prosecco by the glass which is a nice touch and thoroughly welcome on a warm day.
There is a long bar with a selection of real ales and local cider, dogs are welcome in the bar area.
The restaurant which is bright and airy with fresh flowers on the tables, candles and spotless glassware, offers locally sourced seasonal fresh produce. The menu changes daily to reflect the availability of fresh local produce.
The menu is varied, providing a marvelous choice from your wonderful Battered Cod and Chips to the more refined Hake and Samphire with Rustic Chips and Pea Shoots. The steak pies are legendary and cut from a huge dish…..
There is a new outdoor patio area which is very comfortable and a great place for a relaxing lunch.
Having eaten at the pub many times with family and friends it has become a firm favourite with us as the food is beautifully presented and incredibly tasty. Hats off to the kitchen staff who cook everything from scratch. A rare achievement in any restaurant.
