Set in an enviable location covering some six acres of rural Dorset, this welcoming house makes a fantastic base for family holidays exploring all that the coast and countryside have to offer

This traditional Dorset longhouse is an idyllic rural retreat, with a thatched roof, country-cottage gardens, and period features. The property sleeps ten guests, making it ideal for large family gatherings. The outside space is spectacular, with a picturesque terrace and a kitchen garden where you can pick your own produce. Take long walks through the surrounding countryside or head to the Jurassic Coast to experience the delights of Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove (23 miles).

Follow the private driveway to the detached property. Once inside, two steps lead to the open-plan kitchen/diner. This bright space features a traditional AGA and a large dining table for you to all dine together. Steps lead from here to a handy utility room and walk-in pantry. The characterful lounge is a delightful place to unwind, reading your book in the glow of the open fire. Alternatively, curl up in the snug to watch the TV/DVD. Cottage-style stairs lead to the king-size bedroom, and a separate staircase from the central hallway leads to the remaining bedrooms. Due to the age of the property, expect characterful low beams, split levels, and restricted head height in some areas. Outside, dine on the pretty terrace, watch the wildlife in the pond (children must be supervised at all times), or play table tennis in the games room. There is also a fully enclosed area where children can play.

The Blackmore Vale is a haven for walkers. Take a climb to the top of Bulbarrow Hill (5 miles) for spectacular views over five counties. The nearby market town of Sturminster Newton (3 miles) is a great place to pick up local produce and has a regular farmers’ market. Journey south to Durdle Door and the iconic limestone arch or visit Lulworth Cove, with its turquoise waters and stunning scenery.

This is a fantastic house for a holiday in the most beautiful Dorset countryside. The kitchen/living room is a marvellous space to hang out in. We enjoyed lunch in the garden and wandering around the huge outdoor spaces. Beds were comfortable, though some found the doubles a bit small. The children enjoyed sleeping on the mezzanine. The cooker is rRead moreather small for cooking for 10, and we were disappointed that the Aga wasn't functioning as we needed that extra cooking facility. All in all, great! Hide

We had a great time at Rose farm for a family reunion. It was plenty of space for 8 adults and 3 children and is in a beautiful quiet location. We enjoyed exploring the grounds and playing games outside, and spent most of our time in the lovely warm kitchen. Peter couldn't have been more helpful during our stay.

A beautiful farm house set in glorious grounds we had so much fun there after a warm welcome from the owner. Very well equipped and so lovely to be able to see the chickens, peacock and to be able to feed them and even collect eggs! A wonderful weekend enjoying a family party celebrating a 70th birthday.

The hens and guinea fowl roaming the garden were a delight. We enjoyed feeding them and collecting fresh eggs from the hen house every day.

Although it's just three hours from London and the South East, Dorset feels like a world away from the hubbub of the city. This gem of a county offers the very best of rural England: magnificent coastal scenery, vast sandy beaches, rolling hills, charming villages, country pubs, stately homes and medieval castles.

Take time to explore the dramatic and diverse coastline. Stretching 95 miles from East Devon to Poole, the Jurassic Coast has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and is the only natural phenomenon in England to achieve this status. Here, visitors can uncover Earth's fascinating history whilst enjoying unspoilt views over superb beaches, many of which welcome canine companions too. From the iconic rural rock arch at Durdle Door to the endless sandy expanses of Studland, Dorset has it all.

Why not head to Lyme Regis, classified as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty? Like much of West Dorset, it has an old-world ambience and offers excellent fossil hunting opportunities. Or head east to discover the beauty of Lulworth and the vibrant seaside resort of Swanage.

Steeped in history and with a certain quintessential charm, Dorset's glorious countryside is peppered with small towns and villages which are well worth a visit. Many are graced with fine buildings, immortalised in the books of Thomas Hardy, a Dorset-born novelist and poet. For more energetic visitors, footpaths and cycleways reveal the county's hidden secrets with the coast always close at hand for those who love the water.
