This eco-friendly former barn is set within a rural village close to historic Sherborne. With both contemporary style and character features, it is the ideal choice for small families wishing to tour.

Book a stay for four at this inviting, barn-style holiday home, near Middlemarsh, 6 miles from the pretty Dorset market town of Sherborne. Set around a shared courtyard but with a private, covered terrace, where you can relax with a cup of tea or glass of wine, this two-bedroom property is well placed for walks and cycle rides through the surrounding scenic countryside. Stroll in the paddock on sunny days or retreat inside when it’s chilly to light the wood burner. See the famous chalk Cerne Abbas Giant, carved into the hill above the village.

Enter this single-storey, rural abode and follow the hall into the bright lounge/kitchen/dining room, with its vaulted ceiling and wooden beams. Settle on the comfortable sofas by a roaring wood burner to watch a film together on the Smart TV. Head to the kitchen area at mealtimes to find everything you need to whip up tasty feasts; then dine together at the farmhouse table. There’s a comfortable king-size bedroom and an inviting twin room. The family bathroom is close by. Open the double doors from the lounge/kitchen/diner on fine days to dine out on the covered veranda, which enjoys rural views. Find parking for two vehicles on the site. A small stream runs under the veranda and there is a pond across the driveway in the owners’ garden which is bordered with post and rail fencing, please take care with children.

Enjoy your proximity to picture-postcard Sherborne, with its castles, abbey and exquisite architecture. Peruse the many independent shops here and dine out. Dorchester, 11 miles away, is also a great place to pick up locally sourced provisions. Visit art galleries and museums and take a stroll around the Iron Age hill fort. Plan a day out down to the spectacular Jurassic Coast, 20 miles away, to go swimming at Osmington Mills and look for fossils.

Beautiful, well appointed holiday cottage. The Toller was our home for a week. It is a lovely property and located roughly half an hours drive from most of the activities we wanted to do. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Dorset despite the changeable weather and this was helped in no small part by staying in this lovely property.

Beautifully decorated and very peaceful cottage. Paul and Sophia were lovely and have really made this a lovely place to 'get away from it all'. The kitchen was well stocked for cooking for a family of at least 6 (our parents stayed in Tinker next door and came round for dinner most nights). The view of the paddock was gorgeous and we even saw someRead more deer prancing about there! I'd definitely recommend staying here. Hide

Lovely, new building converted from an old barn in a quiet area of countryside. Very clean, homely and well presented. A quick and easy drive into Dorchester and easy access to the Dorset coast. Cerne Abbas giant a few miles down the road, where we saw wild deer in the evening.

Although it's just three hours from London and the South East, Dorset feels like a world away from the hubbub of the city. This gem of a county offers the very best of rural England: magnificent coastal scenery, vast sandy beaches, rolling hills, charming villages, country pubs, stately homes and medieval castles.

Take time to explore the dramatic and diverse coastline. Stretching 95 miles from East Devon to Poole, the Jurassic Coast has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and is the only natural phenomenon in England to achieve this status. Here, visitors can uncover Earth's fascinating history whilst enjoying unspoilt views over superb beaches, many of which welcome canine companions too. From the iconic rural rock arch at Durdle Door to the endless sandy expanses of Studland, Dorset has it all.

Why not head to Lyme Regis, classified as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty? Like much of West Dorset, it has an old-world ambience and offers excellent fossil hunting opportunities. Or head east to discover the beauty of Lulworth and the vibrant seaside resort of Swanage.

Steeped in history and with a certain quintessential charm, Dorset's glorious countryside is peppered with small towns and villages which are well worth a visit. Many are graced with fine buildings, immortalised in the books of Thomas Hardy, a Dorset-born novelist and poet. For more energetic visitors, footpaths and cycleways reveal the county's hidden secrets with the coast always close at hand for those who love the water.
