Bridport is a Market Town that has a long history as a rope-making centre. Saxon in origin, it became the 4th most important settlement in England in the reign of King Alfred. Many buildings in Bridport date from the 18th Century and this is particularly true of the main high street. Although small, it is vibrant and colourful with an abundance of pubs, restaurants and markets (the farmers market is monthly and a street market runs each Wednesday and Saturday from 8am). It is also able to boast ‘Englands Oldest Family Butchers’ with a continuous line dating back from 1515.
Situated on the mouth of the River Brit, West Bay lies in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. A pretty bustling harbour offers boat and fishing trips and seaside fun. The excellent pubs and restaurants specialise in fresh local seafood. The area has featured in many TV productions including The Rise & Fall of Reginald Perin, Harbour Lights and more recently Broadchurch.
Abbotsbury is a pretty village full of ancient thatched cottages with two pubs, craft shops, galleries and tearooms. Abbotsbury Swannery and the Sub-Tropical Gardens are not to be missed. Beaminster has over 200 listed Ham stone buildings in its historic centre. Cradled in the downs, it is a charming, tranquil, very small town with specialist food shops, craft galleries, restaurants, pubs and is a great base for walking in the surrounding hills.
Bridport and the surrounding are is steeped in history and has some wonderful museums that tell the story of both the land and the sea ……
