Cycling – Swanage and Purbeck

Cycling is a very popular pastime for the occasional participant or the serious tour riders. There are many tracks and trails that are waiting to be discovered around the Swanage and Purbeck are of Dorset. Lending themselves to the family fun ride or to the hard core enthusiast. Here are a few routes to enjoy while on holiday.

Cycle Routes

NCN Route 2: 13.3 miles West Holme to Studland

Follow the River Frome to Wareham then on through Stoborough Heath where you can detour to Arne Nature Reserve. Then onto Hartland Moor and Norden before heading off road along tracks through Rempstone Heath with views across Poole Harbour before joining the road again at Studland and heading for the chain ferry at Shell Bay to Sandbanks.

This is also the route of the Tour de Manche and the Petit Tour de Manche.

Purbeck Ride: 47 mile circular route approx half in Purbeck area

Starting at Wareham cross the River Frome’s water-meadows to Stoborough and its Nature Reserve before arriving at Norden and Corfe Castle. You the turn towards Swanage through Woolgarston cycling under the Purbeck Hills. Climb up through Langton Matravers to the ridge to Kingston before dropping back down to Corfe Castle. Go round the castle and out to Church Knowle and onto the Army Ranges (see Lulworth Area section).

Castle Ride: 11 mile circular route from Norden to Stoborough

Cross Wareham water-meadows and onto Stoborough Heath Nature Reserve and Hartland Moor with views to Corfe Castle. At Norden head to Corfe Castle and Corfe village then on to Church Knowle with its Animal Sanctuary. Climb up through Cocknowle and the ridge with its fantastic views. Then down past the Blue Pool before returning to Wareham.

Priory Ride: 8 mile circular route Wareham to West Holme

Leave Wareham and then follow the valley floor of the River Frome to West Holme and East Holme. Return back along the valley floor and then through Stoborough and across the water-meadows to Wareham

Off Road Trails

Rempstone Ride: 12 miles+ circular route Norden to Studland

Mainly off road passing through varied countryside leave Norden Park and Ride and head through the common to Rempstone Heath and its views of Poole Harbour at the end of the heath you can loop back round or push onto Studland Bay.

Northport Greenway/Sika Trail: 10 mile circular route Wareham/Wareham Forest

Start on the quiet streets of Wareham for 1.5 miles and then onto the Sika Trail in Wareham Forest with its easy riding off road tracks.

Purbeck Mountain Bike Trails: 14 Off Road Trails

Purbeck is great on road or off, quiet country lanes, steep climbs, extreme off-road downhill‘s, coastal and heathland tracks panoramic views and deep mud in winter.
