Powerstock Cider Festival: The Inside Story

This coming Saturday will see craft cider makers and lovers of real full juice cider descend on the rural idyll that is Powerstock. The Powerstock Cider Festival is a charity event hosted by Nick Poole of West Milton Cider in the village hall.

Martin Inwood of Lulworth Skipper (Dorset Cider) gives us the lowdown.

THE BUILD UP

Cider makers begin to congregate on the Friday evening, setting up camp at the Marquis of Lorne or Powerstock Mill. A hearty Saturday lunch is prepared by the ladies of the village and consumed (along with a copious quantity of very special cider!) over a lazy afternoon with plenty of banter between old friends who have been supporting this event for 12 years.  After the apple crumble and cream and custard comes the serious business!

JUDGING

Each cider maker will have delivered 3 of their best dry, medium & sweet ciders. The tables are rearranged into rows now groaning under the weight of 60 plus demijohns all to be tasted and deliberated over by the entrants before marking their card.

After the winners are announced, the hall is made ready for the evening ahead.

The cider makers have each brought along a decent quantity of cider in barrels, kegs, boxes and casks, and the centre of the hall is now clear for the great mingling.

 THE MAIN EVENT

Doors open at 6.00pm when 500 lucky ticket holders will file in to the hall to seek out their favourite ciders and taste probably some of the best, unique ciders that you could find in one place, on one evening in April, anywhere.

A live band and food – hot Pasties, Stone Baked Pizza from the Citroen Jalopy and Barbeque – add to the atmosphere and make this festival a favourite on the local calendar.

Tickets are just £5.00 and are available from The Marquis Of Lorne, The Three Horseshoes and Nick at West Milton Cider.
