Highlights of what’s on in Dorset this September
The warm, long days of summer are all but over and autumn is just around the corner. However, September in Dorset still offers plenty of shows and events for all the family to enjoy. Early September is always a busy time with the kids going back to school, but towards the end of the month, there are more events for adults to enjoy. Here are our highlights from across the county:
Civil War Encampment, Corfe Castle, 1st–2nd September
Find out what life was like when Corfe Castle was under siege during the English Civil War. Complete all the fun activities at the encampment and follow the family castle quest.
Lyme Regis Folk Festival, 31st August–2nd September
A really popular event at the end of the Summer. Lyme Regis Folk Festival has a full programme of singing, dancing and music–making at the Marine Theatre and other venues around the town. Over the years the festival has unearthed some wonderful young local artists.
Dorset County Show, Dorchester, 1st–2nd September
This annual show features over 450 trade stands and attractions for all the family. It is still run by farming families and those with an interest in farming, horticulture, food and the countryside. The action packed weekend is fun-filled for all ages. (Keep an eye out for some of our staff who may be there with some of their animals).
Bridport Hat Festival, 1st September
A celebration of hats, hundreds of people gather in Bucky Doo Square at lunchtime on “Haturday” “topped” off by a HUGE mass hat-wearing photoshoot. All you need is a hat! A super summer-ending party for the town and its’ visitors.
Swanage Folk Festival, 7th – 9th September
A weekend of music and dance. The marquee on Sandpit Field overlooking Swanage Bay is the heart of the festival hosting music and a craft fair. There will be over 20 bands performing over the weekend at venues around Swanage.
b-Side Festival, Portland, 7th – 16th September
Celebrating 10 years, the b-side Festival showcases the very best in contemporary art which is inspired by the extraordinary island of Portland.
Weymouth Ironman 70.3, Weymouth, 23rd September
This gruelling triathlon is a real test of endurance. Awaiting the competitors is a 1.2 mile swim around Weymouth Bay, a 56 mile bike ride through the rolling Dorset countryside and finishing with a 13.1 mile run (3.5 laps) along the esplanade in Weymouth. This spectator friendly run gives the competitors an opportunity to get lots of support from friends, family and locals. Check our Road Closure information HERE.
Isle of Purbeck Walking Festival, 14th – 16th September
A series of great walks led by local experts around the Isle of Purbeck which is truly a walkers paradise.
