Dorset is one of the premier counties in the south of England for providing opportunities to enjoy nature while on holiday. The RSPB has several reserves, the Arne Peninsular is a fine example and Dorset is well known as a major stepping point on the route of migratory birds as is Portland Bill a Mecca for bird watchers.
Dorset Coastal Cottages is a supporter of the Dorset Wildlife Trust and you can also contribute to their excellent work via a donation on our Booking Form. They maintain a variety of Wildlife Reserves throughout the county including the Purbeck Marine Nature Reserve at Kimmeridge Bay and Brownsea Island two of many that are close to Dorset Coastal Cottages.
The other charity supported by Dorset Coastal Cottages is the Jurassic Coast. The educational work undertaken brings to life the amazing fossil record, especially at Lyme Regis/Charmouth but also along the glorious 90 odd miles between there and Swanage/Studland.

The RSPB nature reserve in Arne is a nature lover and bird watching paradise. The reserve is a vast expanse of heath and woodland bordering on Poole Harbour. The area is famed for the diverse birdlife. Twitchers are well catered for with hides scattered all over the area in opportunistic locations. The Arne peninsular is popular in all of the seasons due to unique visitors and prolific mating seasons. A particularly popular time is Autumn for the Sika deer rutting season, where the stags posture about with their herds and an array of winter migrant species that pass through. Book one of our fabulous self catering holiday cottages in the area for a perfect nature filled holiday.

Due to it’s unique geology Kimmeridge Bay has an underwater eco-system quite unlike anywhere else in Dorset. The Dorset Wildlife Trust, of whom we are very proud sponsors, have an excellent Marine information centre by the boat ramp close to the waters edge which has interactive displays and aquaria perfect for all ages. Beneath the waves in Kimmeridge is fantastic for both snorkellers and divers alike with signposted underwater nature trails through the different sea bed habitats. If you don’t fancy getting your hair wet (you still might!) then join a guide for the excellent Kayak Safaris across the bay with clear bottomed kayaks these are ideal for viewing the giant aquarium beneath you.

The picturesque village of Abbotsbury lies on the coast road halfway between Bridport and Weymouth on the edge of Chesil beach. It is the only place in the world where you have the opportunity to walk through the heart of a colony of nesting mute swans. The swannery is a fabulous destination for wildlife enthusiasts both young and old and is particularly popular in spring when the cygnets (baby swans) appear from their nest to take their first steps and paddle in the shallows. The sub-tropical gardens and children’s farm in Abbotsbury are also very popular and ideal to make a full day of your visit.
